Seventh-day Adventist principles for healthful living emphasize holistic health that balances spiritual, physical, and mental well-being. Below are some common practices that are provided for educational and informational purposes only and are not intended as medical advice. Always consult your physician or health care provider before beginning any nutrition or exercise program.

Spiritual health –

A fulfilling life is one filled with daily prayer, Bible study, and a relationship with God.

Physical health –

Diet: Minimize meat consumption and eat a well-balanced diet, rich in legumes, whole grains, nuts, fruits, and vegetables.

Exercise: General health guidelines call for at least 150 minutes of moderate activity a week best spread over 4 to 5 days a week, or every day. Basically, we weren’t made to be sedentary in front of a computer screen for work or television screen for leisure.

Avoid harmful substances: The current opioid crisis is a constant reminder as to why this health principal is important.

Sunlight and nature: Get outside! There is no substitute.

Sleep: Some studies estimate that over half of Americans aren’t getting enough sleep. It’s safe state you probably need more sleep than you are getting.

Proper medical care: We believe in the healing power of prayer to enhance medical care and prevention, such as vaccines. Don’t confuse us with Christian Scientists and other religious groups who shun modern medicine.

Mental health –

Gratitude and joyful living are key ingredients.

Similar to physical health recommendations, seek mental healthcare when needed. Depression and other mental health conditions are real and not to be ignored.

    Unlikely To Be Blue

On a recent United flight, I was flipping through their inflight magazine, Hemispheres, and an article caught my attention. The article highlighted Singapore as the newest Blue Zone, a region where people live longer than average. If you’re familiar with Blue Zones, you know that Singapore doesn’t fit the profile. Think of other Blue Zones from Loma…
